The more records I make and hear, the more I realize that I can’t stand overly compressed and processed music. The people who are still making records the old way—real, raw and with heart—those are the ones I want to hear. And those are the ones I want to make. Fred Gillen Jr. and I went back into this one the same way we went into the last album—I brought in tons and tons of crumpled up lyric sheets of songs I’d written in the past year, mostly in the past week, and we’d see what fits. I like recording songs when they are new, and about six of the 11 on this album were like that. No click track—just me and my guitar, and whatever comes out. And then we added the sweet sounds of Abbie Gardner on dobro and lapsteel, Oliver Hill on fiddle, Andy LaDue on drums and Steve Kirkman on electric guitar, plus Fred and me on whatever we could get our hands on. I hope that people hear this album as part of my ongoing learning experience, about myself and about writing songs. “Typical American Tragedy” is a statement of where I was when I wrote and recorded these songs, and I’m proud of it as something people can take home and enjoy. Love, loss, fiddle girls, upstate girls, country music stars, soldiers, dancing, carnivals, mistakes—got ‘em all right here.

“Quality Time” feels like it is my debut record. It started out as a simple session with just me singing and playing guitar, with a little harmonica here and there, just laying down some songs. In fact, we did all of the basic takes live, and most of them were first takes. I couldn’t do the vocals separately, because I knew I’d lose that feeling and energy you can only get with a live take. Ultimately, this simple session turned into a record I am very proud of, thanks to the help of my friends, Fred and the Mollys. These songs are very close to me and I’m really happy to share them. Produced by Fred Gillen Jr. and recorded at Woody’s House Studio in Croton-on-Hudson, NY.
Featuring Fred Gillen Jr. on electric guitars, bass, drums, percussion, and vocals, as well as Red Molly: Laurie MacAllister on vocals, Carolann Solebello on vocals, and Abbie Gardner on dobro and vocals.”Road of War” was featured on the 2006 Tribes Hill Kindred Folk Compilation. You can buy this LP at shows or at CDBaby.com for $12, or by mail, by sending a check for $14 ($12 + $2 shipping) to:

Eclectic Basement Abnormalities (2006)
1. E.B.A.
2. Nobody Else
3. Mr. Oppressor
4. Being Human
5. You Know I Would
6. So Far Away |
This EP was recorded live in my basement on May 6, 2006 with Oliver Hill on violin, Gary Bierman on bass, David Maine on drums, in addition to me on guitar, harmonica, and lead vocals. It features 6 original songs, including “You Know I Would” and “Being Human”. We had a lot of fun making this recording. It started as a jam session that led to a piece of work that we could be proud of. And all in one night! We tried to add little pieces here and there to give the listener the full recording experience, including jams, outtakes, and other surprises, sorta like a ‘basement tapes’ thing…To order, send check for $8 ($6 + $2 shipping) to:

This is a collection of songs I recorded with my friend Gary Bierman from November ‘05 to April ‘06. Many of the songs were cowritten with Gary, face to face, line for line, in my basement, such as “Hold You Now”, “I Knew”, and the first song we ever wrote together, “I Never Saw it Coming.” We recorded this in my lo-fi basement studio and the CD features Oliver Hill on violin (”Just Fine”). This is my first full-length solo LP, featuring 14 original songs, such as “Matters of the Heart”, “If It’s True”, and “Remembrance”, which was chosen to be on the Discovery Channel’s “Dr. G: Medical Examiner” show. The record features many different styles, ranging from folk to rock to alternative to country to just about anything else I could come up with. It features the production talents of Nicolas Pesce of fishBIT and GW Duncanson of Gingersound Studios. Half of the songs were recorded in my basement studio over a four month period, some of the songs were done at Geoff’s, and the rest at Nick Pesce’s on a 4- track tape machine. I’m really proud of this as my first full body of work and it was good to get this one out there. You can buy this LP at CDBaby.com for $8, or by sending a check for $10 ($8 + $2 shipping) to:

1. Till the Sun Comes Up Again
2. Poor Man’s Lullaby
3. idk if i should stop and say goodbye
4. Already There |
This was my debut CD, an EP featuring 4 original songs and a surprising bonus track. Recorded at JR Studios in Yorktown, NY, all in one day on October 13th, 2005. The recordings are rather simple, featuring no more than acoustic guitar, harmonica, lead and backing vocals, and the occasional random percussion. These were some of my first original songs, like “I Don’t Know If I Should Stop and Say Goodbye” and the title track, “Already There”. This EP is out of print. |
