Holy Folk Alliance! (and other news!)

Friday, March 2nd, 2007

Hey!

I got back from the 19th Annual International Folk Alliance Conference on Sunday, and I had a blast! It was in Memphis, TN, first time I’ve been down there. Until the last day of the 5-day conference, there was beautiful weather, and I met so many great people. There were musicians, songwriters, bands, radio DJ’s, bookers, managers, record labels, and more!  Some of the great acts I got to meet were the Undesirables (my Canadian Brothers), the Jason Spooner Trio, the Quebe Sisters, the Lovell Sisters, Chris Smither, Chuck Brodsky, Beaucup Blues, and a whole lot more.  I also got to play at assorted times with my friends Jonathan Byrd (my guitarist for a few showcases and one of my favorite jamming buddies), Diana Jones, Red Molly, and one of my heroes, David Massengill.  I got to be his guitarist and singer for a couple of his showcases and look forward to playing more with him in the future.

One of the other great songwriters I had the pleasure of meeting was Anais Mitchell!  I had heard so many great things about her and even knew some of her songs, and was completely blown away by her performances at the conference.  She has a beautiful way with words, and this uncanny ability to make the simple words she uses sound so beautiful.  I saw two of her private showcases in the Righteous Babe Records room, and then got to play a formal showcase in the round with her and Red Molly on the last night.  I even played on a couple of her songs, including “Your Fonder Heart”, which makes me cry almost every time I hear it.  Anyways, she’s great, please check her out and her new record, “The Brightness”, you won’t be disappointed.

Other news, I’ve gotten some recent radio play on WFUV in New York and another radio station in Seattle.  WFUV played “Brand New Revolution” and they played “Road of War” out in Seattle, both songs are off the new record.  I gave my CD to a lot of DJs at the conference, so we’ll see!

I also have a P.O. box now.  For a copy of the new CD, “Quality Time”, send a check or cash for $14 ($12 plus $2 for shipping) to:

Anthony da Costa

P.O. Box 125

Pleasantville, NY 10570

and within a week or two you should have your copy!

Couldn’t book many gigs in March cause of the play I’m in at school, but I have one on March 15 at a poetry reading and then four at the end of March, including Nashville for the Tin Pan South Festival with Jonathan Edwards, Wendy Waldman and Marshall Crenshaw! Shows page for more.

Peace, and get your copy of the new CD! (if you want..)

It’s Here! “Quality Time” LP NOW AVAILABLE!

Wednesday, February 7th, 2007

Hey everyone,
I’m psyched to say that I just recieved 1,000 copies of my new CD, “Quality Time”, in the mail from the manufacturers today! This is my 5th release, but the first one professionally recorded, produced, mixed, mastered, and manufactured. It features 12 songs written from around mid 2006 and was produced by Fred Gillen Jr. (fredgillenjr.com) at his Woody’s House Studio in Croton-on-Hudson, NY. Fred also played electric guitars, bass, drums, percussion, and sang on the album. The record also features “hot americana trio” Red Molly (redmolly.com)- Laurie MacAllister, Abbie Gardner, and Carolann Solebello- on vocals (and Abbie plays dobro on a couple tracks)!

I’m really proud of this CD and glad to finally be releasing it! I’ve never spent this much time on a record, production wise, and it was an interesting and new experience for me.

I’ll be debuting “Quality Time” at my upcoming shows, the first one being at the Dragonfly Cafe in Pleasantville on February 16th. I’ll also have it with me at the International Folk Alliance Conference in Memphis, TN, which will be held from February 21st through February 25th. I’ll be playing 2 official “Performance Alley” showcases as well as several private showcases.

For now, “Quality Time” will be available only at shows, by seeing me in person, or by mail order (send check for $12, email me for address). Soon, it’ll be on CDBaby.com and most digitial music stores, including iTunes, Napster, etc.

Thanks to everyone who helped me with this process and I hope you buy the CD and enjoy it.

Peace,
Anthony

2007 International Folk Alliance Conference! And other news!

Friday, December 8th, 2006

Hey everybody!

I wanted to share some great news with you all. I was invited to play an official Performance Alley showcase at the 2007 International Folk Alliance Conference, which will be held in Memphis, Tennessee! A few weeks ago, I played some guerilla showcases at my first NERFA, which is the Folk Alliance’s northeastern division, and got a lot of great feedback. Now, I’ll be going to the International conference this February, from the 21st to the 25th, to play and meet a lot of great people! From all over! I’m psyched to go, cause it’s also my first time going to Tennessee! Maybe I’ll get a chance to stop over in Nashville too….Anyways, thanks to the Folk Alliance for their invitiation and congradulations to my good friends Red Molly and Pat Wictor for also being invited to play at these showcases!
I’ll also have my new CD, “Quality Time”, out by then, to hand out to some folks…We’re sending it out on Monday to be mastered by Saff Mastering in Chicago, IL, and my good friend and fellow singer/songwriter Jeffry Braun is working on the artwork! With liner notes by Fred Gillen, Jr., who engineered, produced, and mixed the album, and also played on it! We’ve also got Red Molly doing some vocals and Abbie Gardner on dobro! Anyways, a few preview tracks are on my myspace page…

No shows this weekend but I’ve got 2 next weekend, one on Friday the 15th at the Dragonfly, and the 3rd Annual Tribes Hill Solstice Show on Sunday, where I’ll be playing a duet with DAVID MASSENGILL! Yes, THE David Massengill. I’m excited…We’re gonna play one of his songs..

See you soon,
Anthony

Back from NERFA! What a blast..

Tuesday, November 14th, 2006

Hey everybody! I had an amazing first time at the NERFA Conference, which stands for the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance. I played in numerous showcases including Acoustic Live! Magazine, Tribes Hill Song Circle, and Brad Yoder’s Musical Chairs showcase. I also played a lot with Steve and Fred in our band/collective Hope Machine. One of the highlights for me was having the wonderfully talented girls from Red Molly sing/play with me at each of my solo showcases. I get chills everytime I hear their sweet, sweet harmonies on “Golden Valley”, one of the four songs their beautiful voices appear on my new CD.

Staying up ’til 5 AM playing at Monty’s Room was great! It was my good friend Montgomery Delaney’s 10th anniversarry at NERFA this weekend, so he recorded his annual showcase and one of my songs, either “The Devil’s Won” or “Be Happy”, will be featured on it! More info on that as I get it…
I got the chance to meet a lot of people in the business, including record company people, promoters, radio DJs, club/venue bookers, and festival promoters, and the head of the folk alliance! I gave out tons and tons of samplers from the new CD and made a lot of great new friends!

Thanks especially to Rick Rock, Marybeth, Steve, Fred, Rich Deans, Ali Chambliss, Kathleen Pemble, and everyone at Tribes Hill for having me and supporting me throug the whole thing. Especially to Rick, who, as usual, was around promoting Tribes Hill members, myself included.  We really appreciate it!
One of the most interesting workshops I attended was a 50-second song critique led by a panel of bookers and promotion people. What they did was listen to the first 50-seconds of your submitted song, and evaluated with both positive, constructive, and negative comments, and told you if it would be good for radio. At Rick’s suggestion, I submitted “Quality Time”, and it was very well received. It was a little nervewracking, sitting in the same room as all of these people in the business and your fellow musicians, having your song picked apart for its first 50 seconds, but it was worth it, as I learned a lot about what these music business folk are looking for.
I could go on and on, but here’s a review from Larry Hoyt, a Singer/Songwriter and Folk DJ on WAER fm…
“A very talented, very young man. For the ‘On the Griddle’ workshop (in which a panel of five music industry professions critiqued the first 50 seconds of about 30 submitted songs) Anthony’s song received some of the highest praise from both the panelists (and seemingly from the audience, given their overall reaction). Later on, I had the pleasure of jamming on a few songs with Anthony and others at the Tribe’s Hill song circle tribute to ‘Folk’s Troubadors’, and believe me, this young fellow, Anthony da Costa, can play guitar and sing!”

Thanks to Larry for his kind words.

I also have posted two new recordings on my MySpace page, final versions of “Quality Time” and “Golden Valley”, featuring the talented production of Fred Gillen, Jr. and the heavenly choir that is Red Molly (plus some sweet dobro sounds on “Quality Time” by Abbie Gardner!)
Enjoy.
Playing in Mohegan Lake, NY this weekend with Hope Machine. Check the shows for details.

Peace,
Anthony

NERFA Here I Come!

Saturday, November 4th, 2006

Hey! This year marks my first time being at the NERFA Conference, which is a music gathering sponsored by the National Folk Alliance. I’m now officially a card-carrying member, and I’ll be at the 2006 Conference from November 10th through the 12th, hanginig out with all of my Tribes Hill family. I’ll be playing at a few showcases, which are listed on the shows page. I’ll also be there to network and meet lots of new people! I can’t wait for this great opportunity to present myself as an artist to a new group of people, and of course to jam with the Tribe at the all-night song circles. I’ll be passing around a little sampler of my new CD as well!
The conference is over 3 days and is at Kutsher’s Resort in Monticello, NY. Leaving early Friday, can’t wait!

I have lots of shows coming up. See you soon, hopefully.

Updates and new CD on the way!

Thursday, September 21st, 2006

Hi everyone. I hope you’re all doing well. It’s the last day of summer, and fall is coming in, so button up your overcoats and get ready for some great fall music! Anyways, it’s been a long time since my last update, and we’re all very busy people these days, so I’ll try to keep it fairly brief. Last time I posted an entry I was about to leave for Italy, which was a great trip for me, very relaxing, and I also got to see a lot of family that I never get to see (including my cousin Stefano, a very big Johnny Cash fan!) Sure, hearing about the planned terrorist hijacks on British planes heading to New York was a little nerve wracking to hear about, but thanks to British intelligence, it’s all good. I later found out that the date that they were supposed to happen was the same day I was coming home to America! That would’ve been crazy with the delays and such…

But yeah since I got back from my vacation, a few things have gone down. I’ve played a lot of shows, including the Chthonic Clash (my debut there, which went really well!), Coffee Labs with my good friend Ana Becker, a Leukemia and Lymphoma Society benefit, the Peekskill Coffeehouse with Jeff Braun, the Dragonfly Cafe with Aaron Maine, Tarrytown’s Ferry-Go-Round Festival with Fred Gillen, Jr., as well as the Towne Crier! All of these shows were really cool and thanks to everyone and anyone who came out to support me. Also, I’ve started school, which is always a drag, but I’m hoping to have a good sophomore year…

Oh, and another thing….MY NEW CD! I’ve been working on a record at Studio Fritz in Croton-on-Hudson, engineered and produced by the one and only Fred Gillen, Jr! The disc will feature about 12 new songs, including “Road of War”, “Tragedy Tale”, “Quality Time”, “Brand New Revolution”, and more! It will also feature Fred on some bass and drums and the vocal/instrumentation stylings of Red Molly! I went in one day before I left for Italy and recorded a bunch of songs, live in the studio…some of which we’ve added to, some we just left alone, and it all sounds pretty sweet to me. We’re almost finished with it, and it not only showcases what I believe are my best songs, but also it’s my first professional-quality CD, as everything I’ve recorded until now has been done in basements…you can sample a few of the songs on my myspace page…I’ll keep you updated…
No shows for now until October, but check the calendar for some great events coming up, such as the Concert for Peace presented by Concerned Families of Westchester and the famed NERFA Conference in Monticello, NY, during which you can hear me at both Acoustic Live and Tribes Hill “guerilla” showcases…anyways, that’s all on the shows page…

Hope to see you soon! -ad
